Los Angeles, December 20, 2024 – In the Shadow of the Cypress, the breathtaking animated short film by husband-and-wife duo Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani, continues its extraordinary awards season journey. The film has been shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short Film category and has just earned a nomination for the prestigious Annie Awards in the category of Best Short Subject.

This hand-drawn 2D animation tells the heartfelt story of an elderly boat captain, a survivor of the Iran-Iraq war grappling with PTSD, and his daughter’s tireless efforts to support him in their remote seaside town. With its universal themes of resilience and hope, the film has touched audiences worldwide and garnered significant acclaim.

In the Shadow of the Cypress has enjoyed a stellar festival run, winning the top prizes at four Oscar Qualifying festivals: Tribeca , Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, Animayo and Spark Animation. It was also presented as part of the celebrated 2024 Light Box Expo, where it was hailed as a standout work of animated storytelling. 

Walter Nicoletti, founder of Voce Spettacolo, shared his excitement: “In the Shadow of the Cypress has proven to be a cultural and artistic milestone. Its recognition by the Academy, its festival triumphs, and now the Annie Awards nomination demonstrate the universal power of its storytelling. The brilliant iranian directors shared the deeply personal connection to their work: “Both of us had personal life experiences that deeply influenced our lives, and those were the main inspiration for the film,” they said. “We also drew from the stories of Iran-Iraq war veterans, whose struggles served as a significant source of inspiration.

The film’s six-year production, completed under challenging circumstances in Iran by Barfak Animation Studio, is a testament to the resilience and dedication of its creators. With its Annie Awards nomination in the Best Short Subject category, In the Shadow of the Cypress continues to establish itself as one of the most compelling animated works of the year. The Annie Awards, widely considered the highest honor in animation, adding yet another highlight to this extraordinary journey.
